What does “hashing” mean when using eMule and how do you fix it?

I have recently started using eMule to download some files and for most of the time, things have gone OK. However, within the last week or so, the status of some of my files has shown as “hashing”. What exactly does this mean?? Also, how do you fix it or will these files right themselves and change back to either “waiting” or “downloading”?? If there is a technical fix, can someone please explain it in simple terms as I am not really that “techy” and I really don’t want to start messing around with reference files or registration entries or drivers and alike.
