hash decrypter
Windows XP login Recovery– Hash decrypter?
Hi,
I have recently used loginrecovery.com to recover my XP administrator password. But, when i upload the UPLOAD.txt file to the site, it says processing for 2 days (at 0%) and then when the two days is up, it says in the password field [BLANK] for all of them. I know these passwords not to be blank. So, my question is– is there another program that i can use to decrypt this hash file? I do not know what type they are or how to find out, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
It depends how much effort or money you’re willing to put into it. Windows uses two types of hash to store passwords. The older hashing algorithm being LM hashes – which are trivial to turn back into a password. The newer hashing algorithm is NTLM and is a lot more difficult to crack. However, NTML hashing is only used if your password is longer than 15 characters long, or you’ve altered the security policy to always use NTLM. Providing you haven’t set it to do this and that your password is less than 15 characters your password will be stored with the easy to crack LM hashing algorithm.
If you go to the following link:
http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/
You can download a live cd which you burn to a disk, then boot from it and it will recover all LM hashes for you. I have tried this on three random computers and recovered all passwords from 2/3 computers. It’s certainly the best I’ve come across, and free.
