Trip to Vancouver B.C.?

Hi all,
My boyfriend and I are going to be visiting Vancouver May 14th through May 17th and we would like to know what we SHOULDN’T miss. We’re more into local stuff, rather than tourist attractions.

We want to see local things during the day (Parks, music, festivals, lakes, beaches, etc.) and do some partying at night (Bars, HASH BARS, venues, theaters, etc.)

We are more about “living” the city, than cramming our vacation full of long drawn out events. So for locals, if money wasn’t an issue… what would your perfect day/night in Vancouver be like?

Also, best, cheapest, and safest place to stash your car while downtown? (we are driving)

THANKS!!!

That time in May things that I would consider fun to do would be:
o Stanley Park – its a huge park and its absolutely beautiful
o Wreck Beach – gorgeous beach, located just off of the University of BC. Word of warning, its a beautiful beach but its clothing optional. You take Trail 6 to get there.
o Horseshoe Bay – its not far from Vancouver and its worth the drive to check it out. Trolls Restraurant has amazing fish and chips and they have a park across from it on the harbour which has the mountains and the ocean . . . beautiful.
o Vancouver Aquarium (in Stanley Park)
o PlayLand (PNE unfortunately is not open when you are visiting in May)
o General Motors Place – concerts/events/hockey – http://www.generalmotorsplace.com/
o Queen Elizabeth Theatre – http://vancouver.ca/Theatres/qet/qet.html
o Metropolis at Metrotown – HUGE mall, lots of fun if you like shopping. You can take the sky train straight there. http://www.metropolisatmetrotown.com/
o Granville Island – I go shopping here on occasion, its a nice place and has lots of little shops to check out http://www.granvilleisland.com/en
o If you keep your eyes open and do your reaserach they are ALWAYS shooting movies here. Last summer we had an entire filming crew in front of my house on the street filming a van riddld with bullet holes and a few California State Police cars. They kept driving them from one end of the street to the other on flat beds. Crazy stuff, but not uncommon.
o Enjoy the night life. You don’t actually have to GO anywhere to be amazed by the night life. Just going for a walk in a busy area at night with the musicians playing in the background is amazing. There are tons of really nice coffee shops and bars to enjoy. Whatever hotel you end up staying at, ask the front desk and see what they enjoy doing. They usually have some excellent tips and options.

If I were you I would take advantage of the public transit. It can get expensive parking your car downtown. There really is not a lot of parking so you end up having to go to parking garages and paid parking lots to leave your vehicle. The sky train is an excellent way to go across the Greater Vancouver Area in no time. To check out the transit go to this website: http://www.translink.bc.ca/

There really is no BAD area to leave your car in Vancouver. Just keep an eye open for signs for the parking garages. They are usually fairly secure. For the most part they are all about the same depending on the area you are looking at. I highly recommend public transit however.

Also, when your out and about its safest to stay in the well lit/high traffic areas. Best of luck to you and have a great trip.
